Which games had the best jetpacks?

[This week, Nintendo Enthusiast is brought to you by Jet Kave Adventure. This is a sponsored post.]

Who doesn’t love a good jetpack? We love ‘em so much, we made a whole game about them, plus cavemen, dinosaurs, robots, and aliens! But we’ll get to that in a second. First, we wanted to look back on some of our favorite jetpacks in gaming. Let us know your picks in the comments!

Tribes series

The Tribes series was not only one of the earliest forays into large-scale multiplayer battles, but it further set itself apart with an unflinching commitment to jetpack-driven gameplay.

Super Mario Sunshine

In one of the more ingenious interpretations of jetpacks, Mario squirting and rocketing around Isle Delfino with FLUDD (Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device) brought a whole new dimension to the gameplay established in the genre-defining Super Mario 64.

Just Cause 3

Although the jetpack in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will always hold a special place in our hearts, the Bavarium Wingsuit in Just Cause 3 takes things to a whole other level. Armed with a gatling gun and rocket launcher, the Bavarium Wingsuit allows Rico to up his havoc-wreaking antics and look super cool doing it.

Pilotwings is one of only two games on this list that doesn’t involve murder and destruction. This instant classic for the Super NES introduced players to a number of airborne vehicles, with a standout being the “Rocketbelt,” for obvious reasons. We’re getting anxiety just remembering the alert sound as our rocketeer plummeted towards the water…

Jetpack Joyride

There’s an endless number of endless runners out there, but few were as fun and unique as Halfbrick’s award-winning Jetpack Joyride. Building off the studio’s previous foray into endless running, Monster Dash, Jetpack Joyride featured Barry Steakfries trying out a multitude of different jetpacks, from robo-dragons to literal cash machines.

Battlefront series

Whether you’re playing as a Jet Trooper or Boba Fett himself, the Star Wars game universe is no stranger to jetpacks. Just steer clear of Sarlacc pits or you’re going to have a bad time!

Titanfall 2

Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall series was built on the studio’s legendary history of defining high-quality FPS action. Aside from the titular titans, mobility is the name of the game in Titanfall 2 thanks to a multifunctional jump kit that allows maneuvers like double jumps, wall-running, and temporary hovering.

A key component to Overwatch’s success is that it plays as good as it looks, and that’s why Pharah is such a standout character. Taking to the skies and raining justice from above never gets old!

Cave Story 3D / Donkey Kong Country Returns / LittleBigPlanet

Last but not least, a shout out to this triple threat of fellow 2.5D titles, all of whom combined jetpacks with clever platforming and tight controls. Those are certainly some big shoes to fill!
