Remembering failure: Luigi’s Mansion 3 pays tribute to Nintendo’s troubled Virtual Boy

Virtual Boy

Halloween is just around the corner! You know what that means: Luigi’s Mansion 3‘s launch is imminent. Fans of the series, like yours truly, were curious if the title would honor an old Nintendo peripheral. The first game parodied the Game Boy Color with the Game Boy Horror device, while the sequel referenced the DS with the Dual Scream. It looks like the third title will pay tribute to the Virtual Boy, Nintendo’s dismal first foray into the world of virtual reality.

Virtual Boy = Virtual Boo? Brilliant!

Wow, that looks just like the Virtual Boy! The developers nailed the awful red tint of the interface. Honestly, though, it’s nice to see a company like Nintendo be a little self-deprecating. You have to acknowledge the mistakes of the past to build a better future!

No word yet on if Luigi’s Mansion 3 will utilize the Labo VR. But how could it not with the Virtual Boo?! It’s practically begging to have some cross-functionality!
