EarthBound (known in Japan as Mother 2) is just about the ultimate example of a cult classic. It wasn’t a massive sales success in its own time, but it has built up a passionate fan base over the years. That passion eventually convinced Nintendo to re-release it on Wii U, and they even brought the first Mother game to that platform as EarthBound Beginnings. During today’s Nintendo Direct, we got the exciting news that both games are also coming to Nintendo Switch! If you think you’re thrilled, it’s probably nothing compared to the creator of the games. In a new YouTube video, EarthBound creator Shigesato Itoi jumps for joy over the EarthBound Switch news.

As Itoi explains in the video, he has wanted EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings on Switch for a long time. I know the feeling! In fact, I actually had to pause the former to write this article. Releasing on Switch will give these RPG classics the chance to reach a much wider audience. After all, Wii U only sold around 13 million units. Nintendo Switch Online, on the other hand, already has over 32 million subscribers. Unfortunately, Mother 3 has still never been released outside of Japan in any official capacity.
