Valkyrie Elysium trademarked by Square Enix in Japan

Square Enix has filed trademarks for “Valkyrie Elysium” in Japan, suggesting a possible return or new game for the Valkyrie Profile series. The company filed English and Japanese trademarks for the title on September 16, 2021.

The latest game from the series is the smartphone game Valkyrie Anatomia: The Origin, which was released in Japan in April 2016 and worldwide in April 2019. Valkyrie Anatomia is a prequel to the original Valkyrie Profile, which also received an enhanced port for the PlayStation Portable called Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth back in 2006. Before the mobile game, the last main entry was the 2008 Nintendo DS title Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume.

Enix and tri-Ace co-developed the original Valkyrie Profile, but it was tri-Ace that developed the rest of the games in Valkyrie Profile 2 and Covenant of the Plume. The last major game developed by tri-Ace was Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness (Star Ocean 5) for PlayStation 3 and 4 in 2016. Since then, the developer has only worked on a handful of ports and remasters and nothing since Star Ocean: First Departure R in 2019.

It’s worth noting that the Valkyrie Elysium trademark filing could mean a possible new Valkyrie Profile game, but it could also just be Square Enix holding onto a name for something else that ends up being a big nothing burger. In any case, time will tell what comes out of it, and it would certainly be cool to see tri-Ace back in the mix.
