Here we are with my third and final proverbial cannonball into the already overflowing pool of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fan speculation. This time around it’s my personal top five picks for echo fighters that would be absolutely amazing to include, but I know they never will be. Hey, I’d love to be wrong and have even one of these iconic characters make their way into the brawl. But let’s be honest — that just isn’t happening.
Wonder Red – Captain Falcon
Wonderful 101 is, well, an absolutely wonderful game. It’s no exaggeration to call it Platinum Games’s biggest passion project, so much that employees were living at the office during development. However, unlike their other Nintendo titles such as Star Fox Zero or Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101 sold catastrophically badly. That said, one of the game’s main protagonists, Wonder Red, has been a character people have been screaming to feature in Smash for years now.
How the entire Wonderful 101 cast could join
Wonder Red is essentially one big Viewtiful Joe homage. And for those who don’t know Viewtiful Joe, just imagine a Power Ranger with a cocky attitude. Red could easily be an echo of Captain Falcon or a variety of characters, as he can both represent himself and the entire cast of his game. Any of his Unite Morph moves would work as smashes, tilts, or specials. But it’ll never happen thanks to Wonderful 101‘s abysmal sales and the fact that more popular franchises “should” have echo fighters first.
Proto Man – Mega Man
No, not Zero — Proto Man! Proto Man, Rock’s big brother, first appeared in Mega Man 3 to show us all how much of a “cool” factor a visor give you. And since Nintendo is treating Mega Man better than Capcom has for over a decade, what better way to prove it than to give the franchise two classic representatives?
How the prototype android earns his spot
Proto Man, while very similar to Mega Man in build and style, has a wide range of possibilities that could separate him as an echo fighter. For one, he’s a prototype and has a “faulty” power source. They could either have him hurt himself like Pichu or take longer to charge his beam-based moves. Secondly, he’s got that iconically huge shield. He could do a shield bash for his side special or a reflect. Heck, give him Link’s passive projectile-blocking ability. Too bad Zero, Bass, or even Roll are way more likely than him. Plus, he’s still part of Mega Man’s Final Smash, which essentially eliminates him as anything other than an assist.
Dillon – Jigglypuff/Sonic
Who’s Dillon, you ask? Why he’s only one of the most beloved characters of a franchise no one’s played, Dillon’s Rolling Western. Dillon’s games haven’t ever sold well, and the newest one in 2018 is no exception. But none of that matters, because it’s all about his design! I’ve never seen an armadillo so… so badass! There are a lot of people out there that have been clamoring for Dillon as a playable character since 2012.
Why this armadillo has a chance
Yet somehow Dillon made an appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U as an assist trophy. This was a great honor for a character from a poorly selling IP, but oddly he hasn’t been reconfirmed as one for Ultimate yet. Who would he echo? Most fans say Sonic, but personally, I feel Jigglypuff works way better for his shape, moveset, and rolling hits. Personally, I feel as if Dillon is a real sleeper choice for a character, and Sakurai himself has stated he’d like to include a character exclusive to the Nintendo eShop. But with his franchise being so under the radar, there’s little to no chance.
Big Boss – Solid Snake
For those who didn’t follow the Metal Gear Solid V Kojima fiasco, basically, Konami fired Hideo Kojima and ran off to make money on Pachinko machines. Now, what does this have to do with Smash? Well, Metal Gear is still a Konami franchise, and they don’t plan to do anything with it. That means any opportunity to have Raiden, Grey Fox, or Big Boss in as echo fighters is pretty much gone.
Which came first, the boss or the snake?
Still, Big Boss would be such a great choice, since Snake is a literal clone of Big Boss. Big Boss could be different in a number of ways though. In MGSV, he uses various prosthetic hands to perform his world-renowned espionage. Sakurai could use those same hands for his mov eset. I’m talking a Rocket Fist side special. An Electric Stun Fist ground pound down special. And even a ranged grab thanks to the Hand of Jehuty. Overall, Venom Sna — I mean Big Boss is the perfect echo fighter who’ll never make it in due to Konami’s scummy business practices.
Literally any Fire Emblem character without a sword – Ike, Corrin, or Robin
Finally — and this one is a little broad — one thing we’ll never get is a non-sword-using Fire Emblem character. It’s honestly so infuriating, but Nintendo just can’t stay away from the boring Fire Emblem picks. I mean, even in Fire Emblem Warriors, a musou game with mechanics that encourage having a diverse cast, there’s a real lack of unique characters.
I can’t carry all these swords
And don’t even get me started on counterattacks. It’s Sakurai’s biggest crutch. There must be 10 different characters in Smash all with the same counterattack. Every Fire Emblem character has one, Little Mac has one, and even Palutena has one! I just want one Wyvern Knight or axe user. Robin was a step in the right direction, and Corrin is close but not quite there. Rinkah from Awakening could work, as she’s a popular character as well as a club user. Takumi could also work, being a primary character in Fates as well as a bowman. But my personal top choice is Anna, the timeline-hopping merchant who is essentially the mascot of the franchise. But Fire Emblem already has seven playable characters, so I don’t expect any more.
Not much time left for echo fighters
And there it is! I can speculate on Smash until I’m old and wrinkly. But what about you? What are your top picks for echo fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? The game is releasing in December, so there are only a couple months left! Realistically, I’d estimate there’s only going to be one or two more character reveals, but hey, I could be wrong. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
