Tinker Racers crashes onto Switch in Q1 2021

The Switch’s ever-expanding library is filled with a lot of racing games at this point, but this new game from indie studio Rumbora Party Games is a little different. It’s called Tinker Racers, and this isometric little indie isn’t just about crossing the finishing line—it’s about surviving to get there.

As menacing as that sounds, what’s really happening in this title is that you’ll take control of a little toy car going up against several opponents as you all race across homemade tracks. Zoom through books, pots, beds, and tabletops as you bob and weave through the corners, keeping up your speed in an effort not to get caught up by the screen. Cars that do go off-screen are immediately eliminated, meaning that you’re not just a race for the win, it’s a race to stay alive. Well, as “alive” as a little plastic toy car can be.

Extra points are also awarded for keeping your car in good condition throughout the race, so don’t just be fast, but be careful too.

Speed and precision in Tinker Racers

Tinker Races will feature single-player and also local multiplayer options (including four-player split-screen); the latter of which will allow you to earn higher scores as you work together with other players to cross the finish line in one piece.

As someone who used to pretend my bedroom was the ultimate racetrack for my various Hot Wheels and Matchbox vehicles, it’s cool to see a concept in virtual form. Not the first time a game like this has been developed, but the survival aspect definitely shakes up the formula just enough to make Tinker Racers stand out.

Tinker Racers will make its way onto the Nintendo Switch eShop in Q1 2021. No price or specific release date has yet to be revealed, but that should come closer to launch.
