The World Ends with You anime is in the works

The World Ends with You Anime Expo Square Enix

Remember last month when artwork featuring Neku, Shiki, and the rest of the gang unexpectedly graced the cover of Anime Expo’s program? It turns out that they are indeed announcing a The World Ends with You anime at the convention’s stream next week! The event will air on July 3 at 6 p.m. PDT / 9 p.m. EDT. Square Enix opened up a new Twitter page to advertise it and link to the teaser site.

For those who don’t know, The World Ends with You was a brilliantly innovative RPG that came out in 2007 for the DS (2008 in the West) that utilized both screens simultaneously for its combat. It also featured a cast of fashionable young teenagers navigating a modern-day Shibuya, Tokyo, complete with Hachiko statue and 109 department store (renamed 104). The J-pop soundtrack was also a big seller, as was the art style by Tetsuya Nomura.

In the game, the main character wakes up with no memories and a countdown on his hand. You find out that he is dead and the timer is signaling seven days until his spirit passes on to oblivion. Considering the theme, and the fact that the teaser is referencing that timer, it’s strange that they wouldn’t unveil The World Ends with You anime tomorrow, considering that would be a week from the event. Needless to say, the counter is not counting down yet.
