Sales for The Witcher series from CD Projekt Red have now hit the colossal milestone of 50 million units sold around the globe. This includes sales for The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and of course The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as well as the various spin-off games such as Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.

The last time that sales for The Witcher series were reported was about this time last year, when they stood at 40 million units sold. That additional 10 million units has likely been driven by the success of The Witcher Netflix show in conjunction with the Nintendo Switch release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The third game in the series sold 6 million units in 2019 alone, which would have included sales of the Switch port. This was the most units that the game had sold since it launched in 2015, when it sold 9 million units in one year.

According to, the success of The Witcher series actually pushed developer CD Projekt Red close to Ubisoft as the highest-valued company in Europe, though this may not last long with Ubisoft’s upcoming slate of AAA game releases.

At one point CD Projekt Red was talking about developing more games like Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, creating a new spin-off series. We’ll just have to wait and see what they have planned after Cyberpunk 2077.

Started out playing Metroid 2 on the GameBoy at around 5 years-old, and now I write about games all day long. Can't play Switch and drive, I've tried. As time goes on the Switch is quickly becoming my favourite console of all time.
