The Witcher: Blood Origin is a 6-part live-action prequel series on Netflix

The Witcher Season 3 Making The Witcher: Blood Origin Netflix live-action series prequel six parts 1200 years first witcher origin story Declan de Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich

Did you love season 1 of The Witcher on Netflix? Then you’re in luck — and not just because an anime movie about Vesemir is in the works too. Nope, Netflix has newly announced The Witcher: Blood Origin, a six-part live-action prequel spin-off series set 1200 years before the main series. It will tell the story of the first witcher, and we’ll be treated to a much more chaotic landscape from before “the conjunction of the spheres,” where men, elves, and monsters are kind of all doing their own thing.

Declan de Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will be executive producers of The Witcher: Blood Origin, and de Barra will also be the showrunner. De Barra has worked on shows like, uh, Iron Fist, but hey — season 2 of that show was decent! Hissrich is of course already helming the main The Witcher series. And original series author Andrzej Sapkowski will serve as creative consultant on the series. Sapkowski shared, “It is exciting that the world of witcher — as planned in the very beginning — is expanding. I hope it will bring more fans to the world of my books.”

If you’re really hungry for what the narrative of The Witcher: Blood Origin will entail, de Barra delved into that:

As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin. A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books – What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall. How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonization and a rewriting of history. Leaving only fragments of a civilization’s true story behind.

The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher.

Are you down for this new prequel expansion of the mythos? I was a bit iffy on it at first, but if it has Sapkowski’s direct blessing, that’s good enough for me.
