In the span of a few decades, video games have grown from a niche hobby to an omnipresent cultural phenomenon. Naturally, Hollywood wants a piece of that action. Video game movies have become increasingly popular in recent years, though often with mixed to downright bad results. Still, the adaptations keep on coming with no end in sight, and it sounds like a big one is on the way. In a recent interview with Men’s Journal, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson teased a big, badass video game movie reveal for later his year.
The Rock teases a video game movie
The Men’s Journal primarily focused on Johnson’s upcoming role as Black Adam in the DC Universe. There’s lots of talk about his diet and exercise routine, but then the conversation shifted to the topic of video game movies.
Men’s Journal: You’ve had a long history with Microsoft and the Xbox. Do you have any plans to bring video game characters to the big screen?
Dwayne Johnson: I’ve always been a big Madden fan. I can’t tell you which game in particular we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year. We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years. I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world. Of course we’re going to do right by our gamer friends—but really we’re just going to make a great movie.
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time The Rock starred in a video game movie. Johnson starred in the 2005 Doom movie, ultimately becoming the film’s antagonist. It was a flop at the box office and had a harsh critical reception, but I personally think it’s enjoyable for the campy mess that it is.
