The Last Story II listed as upcoming Switch game in Germany

The Last Story II for Nintendo Switch The Last Story 2

German commerce site Media Markt reportedly had a listing up for The Last Story II for Nintendo Switch, an alleged screenshot of which can be seen below. There is no confirmation on the game’s existence yet, but considering the Game Awards are right around the corner, it would make perfect sense if the game were revealed there. And adding even more fuel to the fire is the fact that Nintendo recently renewed the The Last Story trademark.

This game would serve as a sequel to The Last Story, which appeared on Wii in 2012 in North America and was developed by Mistwalker and AQ Interactive. Mistwalker is the studio of legendary game designer Hironobu Sakaguchi, the father of the Final Fantasy series, and The Last Story fittingly marks the last time a Mistwalker game appeared on a home console. The company has since seen financial success on mobile with its Terra Battle series, but fans like me have been really craving a new, full-fledged console experience.

The Last Story in particular was a pretty unique game. It was ultimately an action RPG (agonizingly common these days), but it placed narrative at the forefront with a very linear procession to things (agonizingly rare these days). The characters were memorable and likeable, and in general, the game just worked. Sure, it was probably too easy on the default setting, but I could live with that. Between this and Lost Odyssey on Xbox 360, Sakaguchi proved he still knew what it took to execute a world-class JRPG experience.

I really hope this rumor proves to be legit. I want to see Final Fantasy VII, Phantasy Star IV (in Sega Ages), and The Last Story II all standing side by side as portable Nintendo Switch titles. How about you? Did you play The Last Story, and if not, would you be willing to play a sequel anyway? Maybe Mistwalker could pull a Bayonetta and include the original with the sequel.
