The Game Awards 2019 nominees include Smash Ultimate for GOTY

The Game Awards 2019 nominees Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The Game Awards 2019 are coming Thursday, Dec. 12 at 8:30 p.m. EST, and today the nominees for all categories dropped. Nintendo has some decent but not necessarily extraordinary representation at the event. In particular, many feel that Fire Emblem: Three Houses has been snubbed. Nonetheless, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is among the nominees for Game of the Year, alongside some stellar games like Resident Evil 2 and, ahem, Death Stranding.

Below are additional categories at The Game Awards that include Nintendo titles, especially the “Best Family Game,” which Nintendo owns entirely. Note that Fire Emblem: Three Houses is only nominated for Best Strategy Game:

The Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley is known to have a warm relationship with game designer Hideo Kojima and even features in a cameo role in Kojima’s Death Stranding. That makes it a bit awkward that Death Stranding has been nominated for nine awards when including actor performances. It also brushes shoulders with The Game Awards’ credibility problem in general; it’s certainly a fun event for breaking game announcements like Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but there’s no strong reason to treat it as the “Oscars” for gaming.

If you’re so inclined, you may go vote for your choice for winner in each category of The Game Awards at their garish, “This’ll look cool to 12-year-olds” website now.
