Modding is a great way to play God without any of the horrific consequences (usually), and you never know what people are going to dream up. Along those lines, modder Nes Draug and music programmer Shauing have created The Beatles Adventures in Pepperland, a hack / mod of Super Mario Bros. 2 (SMB2) that “loosely reimagines” the game as the Beatles movie, Yellow Submarine. Instead of Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach, you can play as George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon in Sgt. Pepper-era outfits.
Mechanically, The Beatles Adventures in Pepperland plays like typical SMB2, but now you can take almost any picked-up items through doors with you instead of just keys. Also, you can toss bulldogs at the police, which then attack their heads. So, that’s a thing. Nes Draug notes in a video that killing bulldogs and police weren’t things that happen in Yellow Submarine, so it’s fair to say he’s taken some creative license for this SMB2 Beatles fan hack. The “POW” blocks say “LOVE” now though, so it’s all in good fun.
Althouh, if you don’t actually care to play The Beatles Adventures in Pepperland but would like to hear some 8-bit Beatles tunes, you can listen to Shauing’s soundtrack below.
Super Mario Bros. 2 is itself a pseudo-mod, being basically a reskin of Japanese Famicom Disk System release Doki Doki Panic, so The Beatles in Adventureland certainly preserves that spirit of “Well, why not?”
