Publisher Annapurna Interactive and developer Beethoven & Dinosaur have announced that musical adventure The Artful Escape is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 with a release date of January 25, 2022. It previously released last year on Xbox and PC to a positive reception, and Annapurna describes the game in bizarre yet succinct terms: “A teenage guitar prodigy sets out on a psychedelic, multidimensional journey to inspire his stage persona and confront the legacy of a dead folk legend.” Sure! Normal! The Switch / PlayStation release date trailer for The Artful Escape basically mirrors that energy.
The voice cast has a number of established names attached, including Michael Johnston, Caroline Kinley, Lena Headey, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Strong, and — most impressively by far — Carl Weathers. Carl Weathers was Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise, and thus he ranks among the most important human beings the United States has ever produced. If I could just write this article about Carl Weathers exclusively, I would.
When The Artful Escape first launched last September, sister site The Escapist reviewed it and found it to be a mesmerizing audiovisual experience with some breathtaking set pieces. The game is largely a narrative adventure — and thus light on actual gameplay — but it’s not a game you’re likely to forget. Of course, it remains to be seen if Nintendo Switch can deliver the same amount of visual fidelity, but The Artful Escape should be a good time regardless upon its release date next week.
