Tanuki Justice almost looks like a game ported from the Sega Master System, as its cute pixel art uses an artfully restricted color palette, and it looks really great. But it’s not just yet another old-school platformer headed to Nintendo Switch. It’s also a run-and-gun game — albeit with shurikens — with some bullet hell elements and the option to play co-op. Developer Wonderboy Bobi and publisher No Gravity Games may have a memorable experience on their hands when this title launches on Dec. 10.
Also, the Tanuki Justice trailer is just weirdly hypnotic with its music, so don’t be too surprised if you’re suddenly doing Naruto hand gestures after these 45 seconds are over.
In feudal Japan, you play as a “cute, yet ruthless” raccoon traveling through different landscapes and confronting various challenges. Who exactly you’re fighting and why isn’t clear, but does it really matter? Tanuki Justice promises “dynamic gameplay” that matches the scenery, dozens of enemy types, and “Classical shurikens over the head and a giant shuriken for difficult moments.” Okie dokie.
If you love old-school graphics, platformers, bullet hell, or any mix of those things, the odds seem good you’ll dig Tanuki Justice. The option to play with a friend (or, more likely, family at the current moment) on the couch is pretty great too.
