After watching the company and its fans celebrate the developer’s fortieth birthday, I’ve been thinking about some of the best games to come out of the studio that has famously dabbled in series such as Kirby, Super Smash Brothers, and Adventures of Lolo. They’ve played a critical role in so many wonderful games. Which is your favorite?
My answer is the easy one, and I’m sure tons of you will agree. Super Smash Bros. Melee is an undying fighting classic. It’s still widely played today, despite Super Smash Bros. Ultimate finally stealing some of its thunder nearly twenty years after Super Smash Bros. Melee‘s release. To this day, the game is tight, strategic, and a chaotic joy to play. Even though I’ve primarily shifted over to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, I still find myself catching a few rounds of its legendary GameCube predecessor every few months.
What’s your favorite game developed by HAL Laboratory? The long-lived company has a very high pedigree and a penchant for awesomeness, so there won’t be an obvious answer for everybody. While I’m sure plenty will join me in giving Super Smash Bros. Melee some love, their work with Earthbound, Kirby, and more is sure to draw in a diverse range of devoted fans.
