Chihiro Fujioka has had a long career in game development, with highlights including being the director of Super Mario RPG and co-founding the company AlphaDream, which developed the Mario & Luigi games. AlphaDream is sadly defunct, but Fujioka is keeping active. In fact, the Super Mario RPG director recently appeared for an interview with YouTube channel MinnMax, where Fujioka expressed his desire to direct Super Mario RPG 2 as the final game of his career.
Via MinnMax translation from Japanese, Fujioka said of a hypothetical Super Mario RPG 2, “Yeah, I would absolutely love to make one. … In my career, I have been involved in a lot of games, and I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game if possible. … I think Mario & Luigi is cool, but I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG where you’re only controlling Mario.” When asked if he had story ideas already, Fujioka said that was a “secret.” Of course, Super Mario RPG was a joint collaboration between Nintendo and Square, so if Fujioka wants to get this project going, he’ll have to knock on Square Enix‘s door.
The portion of the MinnMax interview where Chihiro Fujioka discusses his desire to be the director of a Super Mario RPG 2 is cued up below. However, the whole thing is worth listening to, to hear about the creation of Super Mario RPG, Fujioka’s career at AlphaDream, and jamming out with composer Nobuo Uematsu in their band the Earthbound Papas.
