Watch newly unearthed Super Mario Bros. movie footage, if you dare

Super Mario Bros. movie extended cut 15 minutes new footage

Somewhere in the vast multiverse, there is a reality where 1993’s Super Mario Bros. movie is revered as cinema’s greatest masterpiece, usurping Citizen Kane and The Godfather so handily as to be embarrassing. We don’t live in that reality though. We live in the reality where the Super Mario Bros. movie is the embarrassment. But thanks to Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive, an extended cut of the film was acquired back in May with an approximate 15 minutes of extra footage. They are now sharing snippets of that footage, with more to come.

The video does an excellent job of providing context for what occurs before and after this scene in the movie, so that you are not left guessing about any of it. Unfortunately, I have not seen the Super Mario Bros. movie in many years and still have no idea what the narrator is talking about. But basically, it sounds like Mario and Luigi cross paths with a rival duo that is not as golden-hearted as our beloved plumbers, leading to conflict and retribution.

Suffice to say, I hope the other 13-14 minutes of footage will be more riveting. But on the other hand, what exactly is the threshold for “unnecessary” or “not good enough” in a film like the Super Mario Bros. movie? I am morbidly curious to find out.

In any case, the Illumination Mario film has its work cut out for it.
