Super Mario Bros. 35 is basically a Mario battle royale for Switch Online

We’re not crazy, the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct actually happened, and the news is spilling out left and right. Perhaps the most bizarre announcement of all — and one that appeared in no leaks — was that of Super Mario Bros. 35, a battle royale experience akin to Tetris 99, for Nintendo Switch Online.

But no, you’re not jumping on other people’s heads in a terrifying bloodbath. Rather, you and 34 other players try to play through Super Mario Bros. levels as quickly and effectively as possible, and enemies you defeat are sent to another player’s screen to make their game harder and vice versa. You can also activate special items like Super Stars to get a leg up on your opponents.

Super Mario Bros. 35 launches on Oct. 1 as a digital-only game exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online members. Curiously, the game is only planned to be playable until March 31, 2021, which seems like a bizarre restriction considering how much entertainment and value Tetris 99 has brought since its launch. Hopefully, Nintendo will change its mind if it sees this battle royale becoming a big success like Tetris became.

Stick around for more out-of-the-blue Mario 35th anniversary news, and keep an eye out for Super Mario Bros. 35 when it launches at the start of October.
