Super Mario All-Stars is a celebrated collection of the original NES Super Mario Bros. games, first releasing for Super Nintendo and many years later for Wii. It was a convenient way to play a bunch of classics all in one place — and with updated graphics to boot. However, one fan realized how the SNES All-Stars pixel art isn’t as faithful to the original art made for the games as it could be, so he’s taking it upon himself to create a ROM hack that adds in new, more faithful sprites.
Professional Japanese-to-English localizer Clyde Mandelin was the first to spot this cool ROM hack on Twitter.

The Super Mario All-Stars hack is still in development, so you can’t actually try it out yet. But it’s fun just to admire all the new pixel art that hacker “pocket” has created for the game so far. Enjoy a quick sampling:
As you can see, pocket’s goal isn’t to making all the artwork better than it was before. It’s really just about making the sprites more closely resemble the original art that inspired everything. It’s a simple labor of love.
