The best time of the year approaches yet again! Summer Games Done Quick 2020 (SGDQ 2020), also known as Summer Games Done Quick Online this time around, will occur nonstop over the week of Aug. 16-23. Speedrunners will be obliterating video games in style in order to raise money for Doctors Without Borders. For the first time, it will be held entirely online to accommodate the current state of the world, and the schedule for the full event is now live.
This event was originally supposed to occur in person as usual and a bit earlier in the year, but it was postponed due to COVID-19. An online Corona Relief Done Quick event was quickly set up in the interim, which amazingly raised over $400,000 in one hastily arranged weekend. Here’s to hoping Summer Games Done Quick 2020 can stomp that number into dust.
As usual, there are way too many highlights of the SGDQ schedule to list them all here, but nonetheless, I’ll do my best to list a few of ’em! This year, you can expect to see the likes of Streets of Rage 4, Shovel Knight: King of Cards, Super Mario Odyssey, Secret of Mana, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Hollow Knight, Donkey Kong Country 2, Castlevania 2: Belmont’s Revenge, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Zangetsu, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess… and that only covers the event through Tuesday!
On the final day, a very unconventional run of the original Super Smash Bros. will occur: “Break the Target, All Characters Blindfolded.” Uh, wow. There will also be a 100% run of Super Metroid, (Is it GDQ without Metroid?) and closing out the event will be an any% run of Pokémon Shield, which I find a little surprising.
Oh, also — a projected 7-hour, 20-minute Final Fantasy VII Remake speedrun. Giddy up.
