Studio Behind ‘Minions’ Nearing Deal To Create ‘Super Mario’ Animated Film

Super Mario is coming back to the big screen.

Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind Minions, is nearing a deal to create an animated Super Mario Bros. movie, according to The Wall Street Journal. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the legendary franchise, would board as a producer.

Illumination, which made “Despicable Me,” “Minions” and “The Secret Life of Pets,” has been talking to Nintendo for more than a year about the movie, according to the people who know about the recent talks. The potential deal follows an agreement Universal’s theme-parks unit made with Nintendo two years ago to build attractions based on Marioand other characters.”

The outlet also reveals that this potential deal would allow the studio to make multiple films in the franchise, however, only one is currently planned.
