Yesterday, Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe (real name Eric Barone) teamed up with UnsurpassableZ (real name Zach Hartman) to host the very first Stardew Valley Cup. The livestream event boasted a $40,000 prize pool and featured the best Stardew Valley speedrunners and content creators. Following the event, UnsurpassableZ asked Barone a variety of questions from the game’s large community, including questions about future Stardew Valley updates, and at one point, Barone mentioned he may announce his new game “fairly soon.”
Stardew Valley updates uncertain, but a new game of some kind is for sure
Of the many question asked, one asked about a mod that allows players to marry pretty much every NPC in the game. Barone stated that implementing this feature into Stardew Valley would be “just a ton of work,” which is also the reason why he hasn’t added more characters in updates. He explained more about the effort it would take to add this feature:
To have someone become a marriage candidate, that means I have to add a lot of dialogue and at least two more events, and those events take a lot of time. It may seem like it’s not that big of a deal, but they take a huge amount of time. There’s a lot of other stuff – you have to make the spouse room. There’s just a lot to it. So that’s the reason why I haven’t just added more marriage candidates. But there’s no reason why I’m opposed to having more. I think it would be fun.
Barone revealed that he has two characters in mind in terms of marriage candidacy but clarified that the concept isn’t in active development. He said, “I’m not saying there’s going to be another Stardew Valley update. I don’t even know at this point. Right now I am focused on my next game. So, we’ll see.” The most recent Stardew Valley update launched on PC last December and this past February on consoles.
Not much is known about Barone’s new game, but he said during the livestream that “it’s another pixel art game, a top-down perspective similar to Stardew Valley. And in some ways it is kind of similar to Stardew Valley, but it’s not a farming game. It’s something different.” Back in February 2020, Barone stated on Twitter that he was actually working on two new games in the Stardew Valley universe.
