Publisher Raw Fury and developer Massive Damage are back to remind us that Star Renegades is on the way. The game is a roguelike strategy RPG “about outsmarting AI-driven adversaries, forging friendships, and toppling galactic empires spanning over multiple generations,” and it received a new “Corruption” trailer today showcasing an anime narrative sequence. I don’t know what any of it is supposed to mean, but it looks cool at least.
More exciting to me though are the glimpses at the game itself — and the pixel art style. There are some really attractive and distinct visuals on display, and for some reason, some of it reminds me a bit of Xenogears. Have a look.
In Star Renegades, campaign missions are procedurally generated, and there is an “Intelligent Adversary” system where recurring enemy officers become more powerful over time. It sounds like the game may occur over a long period of time, since a key feature of the game is “Unlock dozens of alternate characters as your surviving squad members form bonds and create progeny.” It takes time to make kids.
Meanwhile, if you’d like to develop a better idea of how the turn-based combat system works, with its system of interrupts and counters, (It sounds a little Grandia-ish.) check out the short video from Massive Damage below. Notably, Massive Damage was the developer of Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander.
Raw Fury plans to publish Star Renegades on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2020.
