Square Enix talks E3 canceling, promises strongest ever lineup this year

Square Enix E3 lineup 2020 stronger than ever, strongest ever for next generation: Trials of Mana, Bravely Default II, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Marvel's Avengers

Sure, E3 2020 is canceled, but God forbid that a video game company should miss an opportunity to generate PR buzz. Along those lines, Square Enix has issued a short statement on Twitter about the cancellation of E3, saying it fully supports the decision (What else are they going to say? “We wish the ESA didn’t mind if people got sick and died!”) but that the company is essentially proceeding full steam ahead with high-profile releases. Specifically, the company states, “Our 2020 lineup, and the next generation that lies beyond, is stronger than ever for Square Enix.”

Granted, there may be a kernel of truth to their boast. Trials of Mana releases on April 24 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. Bravely Default II will release sometime this year on Nintendo Switch. PlayStation 4 receives Final Fantasy VII Remake on April 10. Marvel’s Avengers comes to every platform that ain’t Switch on Sept. 4. And PlatinumGames is making Babylon’s Fall for Square Enix with more details yet to be revealed.

And these are just the games we know about! At some point, an Octopath Traveler 2 on Nintendo Switch is expected to emerge as well, for instance.

Bitter old man that I am, I wish Square Enix would just spend all its time making turn-based RPGs, but that’s my personal baggage. What do you make of the year ahead for Square Enix?
