SpongeBob artist creates the “Ultimate Nickelodeon Smash-up”

Nickelodeon Smash

Today, I discovered that for the past few years, Nickelodeon Animation has hosted an internal Super Smash Bros. tournament. Last year, over 70 employees participated, while around 200 watched them duke it out. For this year’s tournament, they’re using Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and to celebrate, SpongeBob Squarepants storyboard artist Kurt Snyder has created the ultimate Smash-up.

The ambitious cross-over features famous Nickelodeon characters throughout its vast history. Classic favorites such as SpongeBob, CatDog, and Tommy Pickles, alongside newer characters like Lincoln Loud appear dressed as Nintendo characters. This in itself is cool enough, but upon closer inspection, you might notice that they’ve all been arranged to mimic the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate cover art!

Though it seems Snyder did a lot of the work on this project, he wasn’t alone. Snyder acknowledged fellow SpongeBob storyboard artist Tim Prendergram as a major help throughout the process. According to Snyder, making the picture was a lot of fun, though he regrets that he didn’t have more time to add in additional characters.

I think my favorite inclusion in this mash-up is CatDog as Ice Climbers, but there’s so much to love about this picture that it’s pretty hard to definitively say. I really appreciate the inclusion of Nickelodeon characters from the ’90s as well, having grown up with them.

Be sure to check out the incredible picture above! Which character is your favorite? Who would you like to see added, if given the chance?
