Last generation, Nintendo took a chance with a strange new IP called Splatoon. The colorful shooter featured teams of kids and/or squids competing to capture as much territory as possible by blasting it with ink guns. Although it was tied to the floundering Wii U, the game was a hit, and a sequel was greenlit for Switch. With the benefit of popular hardware, Splatoon 2 has been even more successful. According to the latest numbers from Nintendo, Splatoon 2 has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
Splatoon 2 hits 10 million sales
With over 10 million sold, Splatoon 2 has already doubled the sales of its predecessor. The official sales total is 10.13 million, up from 9.81 million in the last quarterly report. That means Nintendo sold just over 200,000 copies during the final quarter of the fiscal year, or January 1 through March 30, 2020. This young franchise is quickly becoming one of Nintendo’s strongest, especially in Japan. It’s nice to see a creative risk paying off. Let’s hope this leads to more innovation from Nintendo in the future!
