We haven’t heard a ton from Sonic the Hedgehog much lately, even though 2020 was supposed to be a pretty big year for the Blue Blur (huh, I wonder what got in the way?) even beyond his hit movie. That’s all set to change in 2021, though, if a European product guide for retailers is to be believed. The guide states that Sega will observe the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog with “new games, digital content, events, major announcements and a tailored licensing programme.” That’s right, “games.” An apparently deliberate plural.
Sega’s flagship series has dropped two games in a year before – think back to 2017, for example, which saw Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania. Sega isn’t opposed to observing major hedgehog milestones with new games, either – Sonic Generations, which observed the franchise’s 20th anniversary back in 2011, centered entirely on celebrating past games in the series with an exciting mix of 2D and 3D gameplay.
What games would you like to see from Sonic the Hedgehog in 2021 as he crosses into his 30s? Personally, I can think of a few potential titles I’d love to see – a follow-up to Sonic Generations, for example, or a collection of older Sonic the Hedgehog games such as Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Colors.
