Sonic Team head: The next big year for Sonic the Hedgehog is 2021

Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka: 2021 is a big year for Sonic the Hedgehog

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has one of the most hardcore fanbases of any video game franchise. Maybe it’s because it invokes strong feelings of childhood nostalgia. Maybe it’s because of Sonic’s attitude. Maybe it’s just because Sonic attracts a metric ton of furries. Whatever the reason, Sega isn’t complaining, and neither is Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka.

Talking to Game Informer at E3 2019, Iizuka said, “2017 was a big year for Sonic. The next big year for Sonic is 2021. That’s the 30-year anniversary for Sonic. We are now preparing.” Sega could almost never be accused of not properly supporting Sonic, so we’re bound to get something interesting in 2021.

The year 2017 was when we received Sonic Mania (Yay!) and Sonic Forces (… yay). Likewise, the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog saw Sonic Generations, which was celebrated as a return to greatness for the franchise.

There’s no denying the series has had its ups and downs over time; I swear by Sonic Lost World, but apparently not many agree with me. Still, with each new release, hope renews among the fans, both current and lapsed.

What kind of game are you hoping for in 2021? Something like Sonic Adventure 3, or something more like Sonic Colors? Something new entirely? Let us know!
