Official details have arrived on the 3D animated Sonic the Hedgehog Netflix series that leaked prematurely, and it is officially called Sonic Prime. The series is in development at Netflix, Sega of America, WildBrain, and Man of Action Entertainment to land in 2022 and will consist of 24 episodes. The series will target “kids, families, and long-time fans,” and the only nugget pertaining to the story is that Sonic is going on a “journey of self-discovery and redemption,” in addition to being in a “race to save the universe.” So, it sounds like Sonic is going to screw up and then un-screw up in Sonic Prime, a common plot device.

Netflix Director of Animation Dominique Bazay, Sega Chief Brand Officer Ivo Gerscovich, and WildBrain President Josh Scherba have all issued generically positive statements about the announcement of Sonic Prime. None of them honestly matter, but for the heck of it, here’s Bazay’s enthusiastic message:
Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone’s heart including my own. I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid and it’s a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix — one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy.
Maybe Netflix’s Sonic Prime can be that magic bullet that takes the solid comedy introduced by past TV shows and combines it with the wild action of the video games. If that were to be the case, it could be the best piece of Sonic entertainment ever brought to television.
