Sonic 2022 will be an ‘advancement in what a modern Sonic game can be,’ plus Colors, Origins details

Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka discussed Sega Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Sonic Origins, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2022 Sonic Rangers

In an interview with Game Informer, Sonic Team head and Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka discussed the assorted games announced at Sega’s recent Sonic Central presentation, including Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Sonic Origins, and the Sonic the Hedgehog 2022 game (potentially called Sonic Rangers). He didn’t have anything overly tremendous to share, but for hungry fans, there are a few decent morsels to consider.

On why Sonic Colors is getting this remaster now as Ultimate, Iizuka said he “wanted to deliver a title that would be a quintessentially Sonic title” for new fans won over by the recent movie, so they decided to re-release this game for modern platforms. As for what to expect from Sonic Origins, Iizuka said it will feature new elements not even included in the recent Sega Ages versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 available on Nintendo Switch. He also explained that Sega had “released these titles many times in the past running on emulation but seeing that 4:3 screen ratio on modern 16:9 displays feels very retro.” So Sonic Origins is going full 16:9 with its screen ratios for the games to rectify that.

Finally, about Sonic the Hedgehog 2022, Iizuka offered plenty of vague, not highly informative thoughts:

Ever since the release of Sonic Forces, Sonic Team in Japan was trying many different approaches to deliver a next-gen Sonic experience. While celebrating 30 years of Sonic titles and thinking about what the modern gameplay experience should be for a Sonic title, we also needed to think about what path forward we should plan to take for the next decade. There is a lot I can’t yet talk about, but we are working hard on the title.

… I do believe we will see an advancement in what a modern Sonic game can be. Of course, we will not deny the high-speed action that characterized previous modern Sonic games like Sonic Generations or Sonic Forces, rather we will create a title that our current gaming fans and new gamers will enjoy.

You now know very slightly more about Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Sonic Origins, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2022 via Takashi Iizuka. Use this information responsibly.
