Skateboarding games are beginning to enter that seems to be like a bit of a renaissance era. With a growing number of such titles sprouting up, indie studios Agens and Snowman’s new project Skate City is set to be one of such games coming to the Switch soon. After being announced a little while ago, this tricky sports game has finally received a release date—May 4, 2021.
Skate City is all about customizing your character and then traversing the iconic scenery of Oslo, Barcelona, and LA on a skateboard as you wrack up different kinds of tricks. All of the usual fixings are here such as grabs, grinds, spins, manuals, and flip tricks. The devs also pride themselves on having provided an “easy-to-use” control scheme, which should make performing combos even attainable for beginners.
Chaining said combos will be essential to completing the hundreds of challenges in Skate City, though players will also be able to hone their skills in the Endless Skate mode where they’ll be free to roam around and create their own experiences at their leisure. For players that really put together some beautiful pieces, the game will also have a built-in video mode for capturing those slick combo sessions and impossible-to-recreate moments.
Rise and (rail) grind
Skate City appears to be shaping up to be a solid offering in the skateboarding sub-genre of sports titles. Especially due to its unique 2.5D art style which isn’t often seen with a title like this.
If it’s as simple as the devs make it out to be, a sizeable number of novice skaters might be inclined to select this over the venerable Tony Hawk Pro Skater franchise—but that remains to seen. In any case, options and variety should always be welcomed and it’ll interesting to see how well Skate City fares against the bigger titles.
Skate City will kickflip its way onto the eShop on May 6 for $14.99.
