Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon is a new roguelite puzzler from Yacht Club

Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon

Just because there are no more updates in the works for Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, it doesn’t mean Yacht Club Games is finished with the Blue Burrower’s universe. During the Yacht Club Games Presents livestream earlier today, a new Shovel Knight game was announced. Described by Yacht Club as a rougelite puzzle, Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon looks like a unique blend of dungeon crawling and block puzzle.

In this upcoming entry in the Shovel Knight universe, you’ll be fighting your way through hordes of enemies as you try to escape the titular Pocket Dungeon. Combat works by bumping into enemies, and if you can group them together, you’ll unleash large chain attacks. Of course, the enemies can bump you too, so you’ll also want to be mindful of picking up health and other items as you progress. In addition to standard enemies, familiar characters will be making a return both as bosses and as playable characters. Of course, there will be new characters too, like the helpful Puzzle Knight!

One of the most appealing aspects of Shovel Knight are undoubtedly its art style. With this new adventure comes a new visual style, and while I’m not sure I like it as much as the original Shovel Knight, I’m sure it will grow on me over time. What immediately grabs me though, is the soundtrack. Composed by series veteran Jake Kaufman, the song from the trailer retains the Shovel Knight feel while also modernizing it. If you keep your ears open, you’ll likely be able to pick out some rather familiar themes.

As it was just announced today, little is known about Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, but I’ll be looking forward to digging up more information on it. While we don’t even have a release window, if you’re going to PAX East this weekend, you’ll be able to try a demo containing the first few levels on the Switch.
