One of my favorite things to do in a Pokémon game is shiny hunting, the act of grinding to find a rare version of a specific Pokémon with an alternate color palette. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, there are a variety of shiny hunting methods to take advantage of, including a brand new mechanic exclusive to these remakes. If you’re keen to find a beautiful shiny Pokémon to add to your collection, this shiny hunting guide will teach you everything you need to know about how to catch shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
How to get the Shiny Charm for faster hunting in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
When it comes to shiny hunting methods in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, you should grab the Shiny Charm item that greatly boosts the chances of finding a shiny Pokémon. Just like with past games in the series, obtaining the Shiny Charm is no easy task, as in this game, you will need to complete the National Pokédex.
However, once you have accomplished this somewhat long and arduous task, you can obtain the Shiny Charm at the Hotel Grand Lake, which is located south of the Valor Lakefront. Speak to the gentleman in the far left hotel after completing your Pokédex, and you will receive the Shiny Charm. Although, there’s an odd wrinkle to its use this time.
Typically, the Shiny Charm should improve your shiny Pokémon hunting odds to 1/1365 instead of the usual 1/4096 in random encounters — but in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it doesn’t have any such effect, not right now at least. (It may be a bug.) It does still help with the Masuda method described further below though.
This is a shiny hunting classic where you simply reset the game until you track down a shiny Pokémon. For example, if you make a save before picking your starter at the beginning of the game, you will be able to hunt for a shiny Turtwig, Chimchar, or Piplup. This hunt in particular will take approximately 80-100 seconds per reset, so that might be something to consider before you start the grinding. Additionally, make sure to disable autosave from the in-game settings, as you could easily void your chance of obtaining your prize.
Shiny hunting via random encounters in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
Another shiny hunting guide classic, random encounters are quite straightforward — this is where you run around in tall grass, caves, and more in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl until you encounter a shiny Pokémon. The only problem with this method is that you have no real control over which shiny you encounter, meaning you might end up with something completely different. However, we all know that you want that shiny Bidoof for some reason.
Junichi Masuda is a director and producer of the Pokémon series, and this shiny hunting method is obviously named after him and involves breeding two Pokémon from different regions. For instance, if you were to trade with someone from Japan, obtain a Japanese Ditto, and breed it with an English Chimchar — you would greatly improve your chances of finding a shiny Chimchar. The odds for finding a shiny Pokémon using this method are 1/683 without the Shiny Charm or 1/512 with the Shiny Charm.
Shiny hunting at Pokémon hideaways
Pokémon hideaways are a new feature in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl found in the Grand Underground. If you roam around the Underground for a while, you will occasionally run into a Diglett or Dugtrio. Approaching them will force them to run away, dropping some purple energy in the process. You will want to collect these, as they will add to the counter at the top left corner of the screen. Diglett will add 1 point to the total, while Dugtrio will add 3 to it.
After reaching the maximum of 40, your chances of finding a shiny Pokémon will be boosted for 4 minutes if playing solo or 5 minutes while playing online. Instead of 1/4096, the chances of finding a shiny will become 1/2048 during this time period. However, the community is currently researching this, so we may update this guide with more information in the future.
Use PokéRadar for the fastest, easiest shiny hunting in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
We haven’t seen the likes of the PokéRadar since Pokémon X and Y, but it makes a return in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and plays a role in this guide for shiny hunting. After beating the game and receiving the national Pokédex, you will get access to the PokéRadar, one of the first shiny hunting methods in the series. Essentially, the PokéRadar allows you to search for a variety of Pokémon and create a chain of encounters.
To build a chain, you will want to knock out the same species of Pokémon multiple times. However, if you run into a wild or different Pokémon, the chain will break. The primary goal here is to build up a high chain of encounters, with above 40 being the sweet spot. If you reach this number, the chances of finding a shiny Pokémon will be 1/99! This is easily the best shiny hunting method in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but it can be quite difficult to master. We will have a guide for the PokéRadar available soon.
