This shiny hunting and mass outbreaks guide for Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a work in progress and is being continuously updated.

After nearly a year of anticipation, Pokémon Legends: Arceus has finally arrived on Nintendo Switch. This brand new open-world adventure set in the feudal Hisui region before its transformation into Sinnoh comes with all sorts of surprises. One returning element that is no surprise though is shiny hunting. In this guide, we’re going to explain how to hunt for shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, in addition to exploring the game’s new hunting method known as mass outbreaks.

For those not already aware, a “shiny Pokémon” is one that has an alternate color palette. Most of the Pokémon in Legends: Arceus are obtainable in their shiny forms, aside from a few exceptions (which are referred to as “shiny-locked”). You can obtain a shiny Pokémon in Legends: Arceus by simply running into one while exploring, or by taking advantage of mass outbreaks, which this guide will detail.

What are mass outbreaks?

During your travels throughout the Hisui region, you will occasionally be notified of a phenomenon called a “mass outbreak.” As the name implies, a mass outbreak is when a horde of a particular species decides to randomly appear somewhere on the map. For instance, a flock of Starly could potentially appear in mass numbers, presenting you with the opportunity to track down a shiny.

Right now, a mass outbreak is believed to contain roughly 8-12 spawns, giving you a decent number of chances at being successful in your shiny hunting efforts. Firstly, you will want to speak to the guy standing by the Jubilife Village gate, as he will display the location and details of the current mass outbreak. If you’re unhappy with the current species available in the mass outbreak, simply fast-travel out of Jubilife Village and return there to try again. Before you view the outbreak, make sure to save your game just in case you find one you like.

Now that you’re happy with your target, make a save at a base camp, then head over to the location of the mass outbreak to start your Pokémon Legends: Arceus shiny hunting adventure. At first, only four Pokémon will appear, so you’ll need to slowly knock them out or catch them one by one until the mass outbreak is over. Obviously, you’ll know if you’ve found a shiny by an iconic sparkle effect, so if you don’t find one during an encounter session, return to your Nintendo Switch home screen and reload the game from the save you just created. Once you have done that, return to Jubilife Village, and if you did it correctly, there should be a high chance of the outbreak being the species that you’re after. All you need to do now is repeat these steps until a shiny appears.

That’s everything you need to know about mass outbreaks for now. We will update this section when more developments are made.
