We’ve known about the upcoming animated Super Mario film by Illumination for a while now. However, news about the project has been scarce since its announcement, with the film scheduled to release sometime in 2022. Not much is known about the casting either, but actor / comedian Sebastian Maniscalco revealed casually recently that he will be playing a character named “Spike” in the Super Mario movie. It occurred in the latest episode of the Bertcast, where Maniscalco was interviewed about a variety of topics, and he mentioned, “I’m in the movie Super Mario Bros., an animated movie,” and will be “playing Spike, their boss.”
It looks like the Super Mario movie will be drawing inspiration from Wrecking Crew, as Foreman Spike was Mario and Luigi’s boss. The other less likely option is the enemy Spike, which debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3 in 1988. Maniscalco’s phrasing implies that the former is probably true, so it will be interesting to see the direction the film aims for.
Shigeru Miyamoto is acting as a co-producer, with Illumination stating, “We are keeping him front and center in the creation of this film.” Illumination is well-known for the Despicable Me franchise, The Secret Life of Pets, The Grinch, and Sing. The Super Mario animated movie is scheduled for release sometime next year, and we’re excited to see a proper look at it in the near future.
The brief revelation that Sebastian Maniscalco is playing Spike in the Super Mario movie is cued up below.
