Samurai Shodown getting a Neo Geo shockbox-inspired collector’s edition

Samurai Shodown shockbox collector edition Neo Geo AES

Samurai Shodown is getting a special edition for the Switch and you may want to sit down for this one. Dubbed the Gold Shockbox Edition, it features physical versions of the upcoming Samurai Shodown game, the included bonus game Samurai Shodown!2 – Pocket Fighting Series, and a gorgeous art book. However, the biggest draw here is the box it comes in. Pix’n Love, a French publisher devoted to game history, has created a gorgeous facsimile of the Neo Geo AES packaging.

Not many people would remember the Neo Geo’s home console, the AES. It was ridiculously expensive, with the console retailing for $650 and new games going for $200 and up. Sure, it gave you arcade quality graphics on your home TV set, but back in the ’90s arcade machines were everywhere, and they only put you back a handful of quarters while you waited for your pizza. It’s a shame that it wasn’t more widely adopted, because in addition to the games being gorgeous on the screen, they were also gorgeous in your hands. Check out this Metal Slug shockbox for comparison:

These chunky boys take up a lot of shelf space, but you got a huge piece of gorgeous art for the trouble. I’m sure the Samurai Shodown Shockbox Gold Edition will be a fine addition to any Neo Geo fan’s collection. The game’s release date is currently Q1 2020, and this collector’s edition will probably come out early next year. It’s limited to 2,500 units, so you need to be ready on Dec. 18 at 5:00 Central European Time (11:00 a.m. EST, 8:00 a.m. PST for us Americans). Your rage meter is sure to fill up if you miss it.

Were you one of the dozens of people who actually had a Neo Geo AES back in the day? Will you be trying to pick this one up for the Switch? Let us know!
