Samurai Jack creator wouldn’t work on Battle Through Time until convinced it wasn’t a cash grab

Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time gameplay trailer Genndy Tartakovsky interview

In a recent interview with SyfySamurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky said that, before he got on board with the recent Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time, he told Adult Swim Games that he wasn’t interested in working on the game if the publisher planned to simply “crap it out.” A turd of a game is not what Adult Swims Games had in mind, and once they convinced Tartakovsky of that, he jumped onto the project. Check out Tartakovsky’s account on how he joined below.

“Adult Swim Games were leading the charge on it. And I said, ‘If you’re just gonna crap it out, I don’t want to be involved.’ I know it’s a business and people have to do what they have to do. But they said, ‘No, no, we want to make it really great. We’ve got this great Japanese studio [SOLEIL] to do it.’

I said, ‘Alright, we’ll have Darrick write it and we’ll make it like the adventures from a different perspective but adventures that Jack’s had.’ And then it seemed to fit properly rather than the worst thing [which] was some kind of a quick grab for cash, which was kind of more of how the earlier [games] felt.”

We’re glad that Adult Swim Games was able to talk Tartakovsky into joining Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time. With great gameplay and a compelling secret ending that ties into the series finale, Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time is a pleasant surprise for longtime fans of the classic series, and it’s all the better for having reunited some of the early forces behind the show with the property.
