Sakurai reiterates it’s not his decision to include more sword fighters in Smash

Masahiro Sakurai Sword Fighter sword fighters Pyra Mythra not his decision Nintendo Xenoblade Chronicles 2

The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Pyra and Mythra livestream took place today, revealing their release for the game later today. In an interview with Japanese show Washa Live, series director Masahiro Sakurai chimed in on these new additions to the roster. Some Smash fans expressed disappointment with their reveal, as Pyra and Mythra constitute yet another sword fighter. However, Sakurai reiterated that it’s not his decision whether or not more sword fighters makes their way into Super Smash Bros. Via Nintendo Everything translation, Sakurai said, “Like it or not, it’s not up to me whether another sword fighter goes in the game.” Nintendo is the brains behind who makes it into Super Smash Bros.

Pyra and Mythra are collectively the fourth sword fighter included in the Fighters Pass DLC that Masahiro Sakurai oversees for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Overall, they mark the 16th addition to the roster in terms of sword fighting (including Mii Sword Fighter).

Despite some disappointment from the Smash community, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 fans are extremely happy. Some of us were starting to lose hope that a XC2 character would make their way into the game. Coincidentally, YouTuber Chuggaconroy is currently “let’s playing” Xenoblade Chronicles 2. On the surface, this doesn’t seem like anything special. However, this is the second time a character has been announced during one of his ongoing series. When he played the first Xenoblade game, Shulk was announced for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Spooky.

Are you excited about Pyra and Mythra joining the roster? And do you wish Sakurai had more power over Smash character inclusions and whether or not they all happen to be sword fighters?
