Sakurai celebrates 28th birthday of Kirby with awesome pic, hilarious gripe

Kirby 28th anniversary Masahiro Sakurai Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Copy Ability for new characters

It’s been 28 years since the Japanese launch of Kirby’s Dream Land on April 27, 1992. At the risk of dating myself, I remember when the original Kirby game came out in the United States just a few months later. I played through it countless times, even once on the hard mode! It’s difficult to believe that it’s been 28 years now, and I can’t imagine what Masahiro Sakurai, the pink puff’s dad, must be feeling right now. Even still, he gave us a little present today in the form of a fun screenshot from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

It’s a classic showdown between Cloud Strife and Ganondorf Dragmire, battling to the death while Metal Face fires his laser in the background. But the combatants’ heads have been replaced by Kirby! What a cheeky balloon.

With assistance from Google Translate, Sakurai’s caption says something along the lines of, “Kirby’s 28th anniversary. I still struggle with implementation because I added a copy ability and a copy hat in the second game… (A new one) has to be made every time a new fighter participates.” Sakurai is referring to the fact that the second game in the series, Kirby’s Adventure, introduced the iconic copy ability to the series. Every character in a Super Smash Bros. game provides the star warrior with a new ability, which means that new looks, AI, effects, and more need to be created just for Kirby.

Personally, I read the caption as a mix of pride and exhaustion, similar to hearing a parent sighing, “Why did I have to teach them about that?” when their children are obsessed with something cool and useful, like marine biology. The copy ability is almost certainly the reason why the Kirby games are so beloved and popular and why Kirby himself is a unique Smash fighter, but it provides unique challenges when adding characters to the Super Smash Bros. series.

In any case, happy birthday to the star of the show with maximum pink, Kirby!
