Masahiro Sakurai is famously dedicated to his craft. Most of the time, that means tireless work on the Super Smash Bros. series, but he’s occasionally ventured into other franchises, such as the criminally underrated Kid Icarus: Uprising. Sakurai might be able to venture into another passion project soon – in his latest Famitsu column, he spoke on his current commitment to wrapping up the final six Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighters, and how after that’s all done, he could go to work on pretty much everything.
Right now, all I can think about is producing DLC for “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.” After I finish that, though, it’s a total blank slate.
Quite an intriguing prospect, Sakurai has absolutely earned a wealth of creative freedom for his next project. While he doesn’t seem to have his mind on anything in particular, I’d love to see him try out a sequel to Kid Icarus: Uprising or Kirby Air Ride, make a new IP, or even revitalize a struggling or dormant Nintendo franchise such as Star Fox.
What do you think Sakurai’s next project will be? Do you think he’ll end up working on another Super Smash Bros.? Do you think he’ll jump into a franchise he’s totally unfamiliar with? Will he build one from scratch? Let us know in the comments!
