Compared to Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, SaGa has always been the quirkiest and most cult-esque RPG series in the Square Enix catalogue. However, SaGa recognition is steadily growing around the world, it would seem, and the sales support it. In an interview with RPG Site, SaGa series creator Akitoshi Kawazu and series producers Masanori Ichikawa and Hiroyuki Miura discussed recent events, including more potential remasters and the sales of SaGa Frontier Remastered and Nintendo Switch exclusive Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend, and sales for both are exceeding expectations so far.
“So first regarding Collection of SaGa: In terms of sales, it’s actually a little bit above what we have forecasted, so it’s on a good path,” said Miura. Sales of SaGa Frontier Remastered, which hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and mobile in addition to Switch, are also above what was expected so far. Miura continued, “One thing that was especially unexpected was the number of Steam sales, which have been more than what we had forecasted, and there are more Steam players than we had anticipated. When comparing across the board, though, the Switch version has produced the most sales, which were a lot higher than what we had predicted.”
About more SaGa remasters, Kawazu explained each game will be examined on a case-by-case basis. He said it would take time and effort to bring back a game like Unlimited SaGa, which was infamously dense and reviled by critics upon release, but he suggested other SaGa games may be more readily remastered. Kawazu concluded the conversation hopefully with, “Rest assured, that we are planning the remastering of these titles and making those considerations. Please stay tuned for when we are able to make those announcements.”
So to summarize, SaGa Frontier Remastered and Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend sales are above expectations so far, sales for Frontier are highest on Switch, and more remasters are planned. This is a total win!
