RUMOR – Nintendo “planning to enter” mobile phone market

Nintendo has been involved in the mobile space for the past few years, but solely as a software developer. Though, Nintendo does have a very colorful history of dabbling in all sorts of different business ventures. Having said that, this rumor from Digitimes suggesting that the company intends to enter the mobile phone market is rather interesting.

Digitimes has acquired info from what it refers to as being ‘industry sources’. According to Digitimes’ report, these sources compare Nintendo to that of hardware makers like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Nubia, all of which have been steadily expanding their influence in the mobile sphere:

Despite the fact that gaming handsets are a niche-market segment, other players including Xiaomi, Vivo, Nintendo and Nubia are either strengthening their presence in the market or planning to enter it, said the sources. …There have been speculations about Nintendo planning to launch a gaming handset that can integrate with its Switch consoles, the Japan-based vendor has yet to respond to such speculations.

With this being just a rumor, it needs to be taken into consideration just how likely such a situation might be. While a Nintendo-made phone would be interesting, it would introduce an important question: “Is this necessary?” At this point, the mobile phone market is already seen by many as being oversaturated. Smartphone sales have actually begun to plateau, so bringing yet another device to the table probably wouldn’t make much of a positive difference.

Speculation aside, we’ll have to simply wait and see for now if the Big N makes any move as it relates to this situation. If it does, then hopefully the project wouldn’t end up bombing in a similar fashion to that of the Sony Xperia Play (which was a gaming-oriented phone).
