Rumor: New Donkey Kong in development by Super Mario Odyssey team

internal new Donkey Kong game by Nintendo EPD Tokyo Super Mario Odyssey developer development rumor Zippo LonelyGoomba Donkey Kong Country

Welcome back to rumor country, where you clench the salt shaker tight and hope for the best. With that in mind — sources of varying quality are claiming that the internal development unit Nintendo EPD, which developed Super Mario Odyssey, is working on a new Donkey Kong game for Nintendo Switch. These sources include YouTuber LonelyGoomba, who innocently put forth the rumor while expressing skepticism; known leaker Zippo, who does not have a spotless track record but owes up when wrong; and an anonymous source cited by Nintendo Life, whom the site describes as “very trusted.”

Accounts vary on what this new Donkey Kong game by the Super Mario Odyssey team will actually be. LonelyGoomba claimed to have heard it is a 3D Donkey Kong game, while Zippo calls it a 2D game and Nintendo Life also believes the game is 2D (or, more accurately, 2.5D). So, presuming this new Donkey Kong game exists at all, it is likely a 2.5D platformer.

Here is Zippo’s full take on the alleged new Donkey Kong game at Nintendo EPD:

It’s the big ape’s 40th anniversary, and while I’m not sure how Nintendo is celebrating the occasion, there is a new 2D DK game being developed by EPD Tokyo. Retro is obviously busy with other things, so Nintendo has taken it upon themselves to bring DK back in as internal series. Don’t expect the “Country” moniker to return, as EPD Tokyo are not interested in making a sequel to games they didn’t make. Diddy, Cranky and the Kremling Krew should all be returning in this installment. It sounds like this game is launching before the end of the year. An E3 announcement seems very likely.

As Zippo notes, it has been quite common for decades for outside developers to work on Donkey Kong, including Rare and Retro Studios. It’s pretty exciting if Nintendo EPD really is developing a new Donkey Kong game — though it would be equally exciting if it were just working on a Super Mario Odyssey 2.
