This is a pretty wild one. On ArtStation, former Retro Studios artist Sammy Hall has shared what he describes as very early pre-production concept art for scrapped Retro video games involving (a version of) Sheik and Deku from The Legend of Zelda and Boo from Super Mario respectively. The art is gorgeous, and the concepts inspiring them sound intriguing.
For the Zelda project, dated “2005-2008,” Hall provides the following description: “Fun pre-pre-pre-production origin story of the Master Sword. Within the bad ending of Ocarina of Time exploring the last male Sheik’s (after a genocidal ethnic-cleansing) journey transforming into the Master Sword. All while the Dark Gerudo are giving their 100 year birth to Gannon.” That sounds awesome, but it also sounds like it might be a hard sell for Nintendo. This whole thing strikes me as pretty “pie in the sky,” but the fact that it’s dated over a three-year-period is surprising.
Here is just a sampling of the images:
Meanwhile, with the Boo concept art, there’s little hint of what’s going on from Sammy Hall, as he just provides, “Loads of Boo sketches in very very unfamiliar territory.” Yeah, we can see that. Here’s a sampling:
The video game industry is packed with gorgeous concept art for games that never see the light of day, but these images in particular really get the imagination going. What do you think of these alleged Retro Studios projects that Sammy Hall was working on?
