Reggie may have alluded to retro titles from other systems coming to Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online could potentially feature content from retro systems other than just the Nintendo Entertainment System, depending on how you look at a recent statement from Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime.

The Nintendo of America president was recently interviewed by Kotaku. During the interview, the topic of Switch Online’s collection of retro titles came up. Reggie made an interesting comment:

“As we look to the future… our subscription service, NSO, Nintendo Switch Online is going to be the place where you can play our classic content.”

Notice how Reggie said “as we look to the future” and “classic content”. These lines in particular could possibly suggest that Nintendo does have plans to expand the selection of games to more than just NES games. And, having mentioned the NES, Reggie also stated that there are more titles to come. He explained that the NES games being made available through Switch Online have been “optimized for the Switch environment” and that “we’ll be continuing to release content that way”.

These statements compliment a past interview with Reggie where he described Switch Online as being the successor to the Virtual Console. So, combining his words then and now really does seem to point to the direction that more is on the horizon. But, we’ll just have to wait and see if anything truly comes about. If Nintendo truly is serious about turning NSO into a replacement for the VC, then hopefully it won’t take the company very long to begin introducing games from other systems.
