Red Dead Redemption 2 Switch appears on Spanish retailer site

Red Dead Redemption 2

Following a probably non-substantive fuss over the discovery of a Switch Pro Controller icon in Red Dead Redemption 2‘s game files, Rockstar’s AAA western epic has been listed for Switch on a Spanish retailer site with a vague 2020 release date.

I’m still not ready to jump on the Red Dead Redemption 2 Switch hype train, although the circumstantial stars are beginning to aline for believers between the simultaneous materialization of the Pro Controller icon, this retail listing, and the very real possibility of a looming Nintendo Direct. Plus, after The Witcher 3 came to Switch, well, I refuse to write anything off.

At the same time, the Pro Controller emblem could just as easily be there for a hypothetical update to the game’s Steam version adding native support for the popular gamepad. The retail listing could be a reactionary placement, an indication that the storefront believes that the port might exist and is trying to snag some preorders from major players like Amazon before the game is actually announced and available on other sites. Plus, while I would bet on us seeing a Nintendo Direct in the next couple of weeks, it obviously does not on its own indicate an incoming Red Dead Redemption 2 port. Finally, the game landing on Switch in any remotely playable form would be such a massive technological achievement, perhaps even outdoing the aforementioned The Witcher 3 port that shocked us all upon its reveal last year.

As such, I’m not getting my hopes up for Red Dead Redemption 2 on Switch. Perhaps if a Switch Pro announcement really did happen soon, then I would change my tune, but otherwise, I’ll keep my “unrealistic Switch port” expectations tempered on targets like Grand Theft Auto V, or even the original Red Dead Redemption, which Rockstar unfortunately seems adamantly opposed to porting anywhere.
