Pokémon Sword and Shield launched late last year and quickly began breaking records. They are some of the fastest-selling games both in franchise history and in Switch history, and they’re already climbing the charts. According to the latest sales figures from Nintendo, the Switch titles have already outsold all of the 3DS Pokémon games.
Pokémon Sword and Shield sales
The latest update puts Sword and Shield sales at 17.37 million. That impressive figure is higher than all of the 3DS Pokémon games, and it was accomplished in just four and a half months. X and Y sold 16.45 million copies and Sun and Moon sold 16.18 million. The “Ultra” versions of Sun and Moon sold 8.77 million copies, and Gen 3 remakes Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire sold 14.27 million.
Beyond the 3DS Pokémon games
While Sword and Shield have eclipsed the 3DS Pokémon games, they still have others to catch up to. On DS, Diamond and Pearl sold 17.67 million units, giving them a lead of about 300,000 sales. At the rate the Switch games are selling, it’s possible they’ve already closed that gap, since these numbers are current as of March 30.
The big question is whether or not Sword and Shield will have enough longevity to catch up with Gold and Silver. The Gen 2 games sold 23 million copies, and no entry has ever come close in all the time since then. The upcoming DLC packs should boost interest in the Galar adventures, but will it be enough?
