Pokémon Sword and Shield have an open world called the “Wild Area”

Pokémon Sword and Shield Wild Area

Today, The Pokémon Company finally gave us a new look at the Galar Region of Pokémon Sword and Shield. After the first trailer, some on the internet were worried that the game would be too linear, but it looks like that won’t be entirely the case. During today’s Pokémon Direct, Game Freak revealed a vast, open zone called the Wild Area.

This new Wild Area stretches from town to town across the Galar Region. It’s filled with “abundant nature as far as the eye can see,” and it contains more types of Pokémon than any other area. The Pokémon that appear will vary by day, area, and weather type, so you’ll want to keep checking back for more! You can find Pokémon in the tall grass, in the skies above, and even in the lakes

Much like in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee, you can actually see Pokémon wandering around on the overworld here. The Wild Area is also different from the rest of the game when it comes to the camera. Normally, the camera is fixed, but out in the wild, you have full control. Combine that new camera scheme with the overworld Pokémon, and you’ve got one heck of an immersive Pokémon experience!

The Wild Area is also home to enormous monsters known as Dynamax Pokémon. You’ll be able to team up with other trainers from around the world to battle them in Max Raid Battles, similar to Pokémon GO. You can read more about Dynamax Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield by clicking here.
