One of the most iconic elements of the Pokémon franchise is the dual-game release strategy, where two slightly different versions of the same game come out alongside each other in each entry. While both games follow a similar story and set of characters, the big difference between each one is always the random assortment of Pokémon unique to only one version of the game. Pokémon Sword and Shield are no different, with both of the latest entries in the monster-collecting RPG franchise having their share of pocket monsters that are only obtainable in one version of the game. Usually, your only chance of getting Pokémon from a game you didn’t own was to trade with friends or online players. For the first time ever, though, a new in-game event is making version exclusives for the latest Nintendo Switch entries in the series available to all players regardless of which version they own.
The “Pokedex Completion Event” will see a variety of version exclusive Pokémon from Pokémon Sword appear in the Wild Area of Pokémon Shield via Max Raid Battles, and an equal amount of Pokémon Shield exclusives coming to Pokémon Sword through the same method. Defeating these previously-exclusive creatures will not only give you a rare shot at catching Pokémon you’d never encounter otherwise, but it will also net you helpful post-battle rewards like fossils or Applin evolution items.
The event live now, and is set to run until March 25 at 23:59 UTC.
